UXLabs research program focuses on human-information interaction; in particular the challenges involved in understanding and modelling the context in which people interact with information systems and in developing novel interaction metaphors and technologies to apply that understanding. Much of our recent work has focussed on the challenges involved in searching, navigating and sense-making within complex information spaces. This has three primary facets:

  • Investigation of novel text analytics techniques for extracting structure and meaning from unstructured information sources
  • Development of new interaction and visualisation techniques for exploring complex information spaces
  • Empirical studies of human information-seeking behaviour, in particular the user experience of exploratory search and knowledge discovery applications.

We have ongoing research collaborations with a variety of organisations, including Sheffield University’s iSchool, City University’s Centre for Interactive Systems Research, Essex University’s Language and Computation Group, and Glasgow University’s Information Retrieval group.

We are always interested in potential research partnerships and working on collaborative projects. If you would like to discuss a potential project with us, please get in touch.

About

UXLabs was founded by Tony Russell-Rose to provide user experience research and design services based on a solid foundation of scientific rigour and academic credibility. Tony has over 20 years of experience, most recently as Manager of User Experience at Endeca and editor of the Endeca UI Design Pattern Library, an online resource dedicated to best practice in the design of search and discovery experiences.

Prior to this he was technical lead at Reuters, specialising in advanced user interfaces for information access and search. And before Reuters he was R&D group manager at Canon Research Centre Europe, where he led a team developing next generation information access products and services.

A little while ago I posted a piece examining some of the shortcomings in the way that search strategies are currently expressed; arguing that the approach essentially hasn’t changed in decades. The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog. Here’s an excerpt: The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 22,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 8 sold-out performances for that many […]
